Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /lau̯.ka.ní.ɛː/, /laɸ.kaˈni.i/, /laf.kaˈni.i/, /lau̯.ka.ní.ɛː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /laʍ.kaˈni.e̝/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /laɸ.kaˈni.i/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /laf.kaˈni.i/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /laf.kaˈni.i/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Formation like ἀρτηρία (artēría), from an unattested *λαυκάνη (*laukánē). An aspirated by-form appears in λαυχάνη (laukhánē, “tongue; language”). Since there are no certain correspondences (Lithuanian liaukà (“gland”) has been proposed, but does not convince), and as there is a variant with -χ-, Pre-Greek origin is almost certain. The form in λευκ- may be folk-etymological after λευκός (leukós, “white”), but may also be due to substrate origin.
